Importance for the Black Community

Dr. Hokehe Eko’s establishment of Glow Pediatrics holds immense significance for the Black community:

1. Representation Matters: Dr. Eko’s leadership as a Black pediatrician and entrepreneur challenges historical underrepresentation. By creating a space where Black families can access specialized care, she demonstrates that Black professionals can lead and innovate in healthcare. Her presence in the field also provides Black families with the deserved option of a specialized Black pediatrician for their child with autism or ADHD.

2. Addressing Healthcare Disparities: Autism diagnosis and treatment disparities exist among racial and ethnic groups. Dr. Eko’s clinic directly addresses this gap by providing accessible, culturally competent care. Her work contributes to reducing health inequities.

3. Empowering Families: Black families with autistic children often face unique challenges. Dr. Eko’s clinic offers empathetic support, education, and personalized strategies. Empowered families can advocate for their children’s needs more effectively.

4. Community Building: Glow Pediatrics fosters a sense of community. Families connect with others who share similar experiences, creating a supportive network. Representation within our community reinforces a sense of belonging.

5. Inspiring Future Generations: Dr. Eko’s trailblazing efforts inspire aspiring Black healthcare professionals. Her success shows that breaking barriers is possible, encouraging others to pursue their dreams, especially Black women.

Why It Matters —ASD Prevalence in the Black Community

A recent study found that Black children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were diagnosed an average of more than three years after their parents expressed concerns about their development. On average, these children were diagnosed at 65 months.

Despite almost all of the families having some form of insurance, delays in diagnosis occurred. About 36% reported a significant wait time to see a professional, and 42% saw multiple professionals before being diagnosed. These delays could mean that children are diagnosed too late for early interventions and may contribute to high rates of intellectual disability (ID), which was diagnosed in about 35% of the children.

Connections to BIPOC Self-Care

Representation —Dr. Eko’s leadership as a Black pediatrician inspires hope within the community. When Black families see someone who looks like them leading in healthcare, it reinforces a sense of belonging and encourages self-care. Representation matters.

Cultural CompetenceBy creating a culturally competent clinic, Dr. Eko acknowledges the unique needs and experiences of Black families. Self-care involves feeling understood and respected, and her approach fosters just that.

Breaking Stigmas —Dr. Eko’s clinic challenges community stigmas related to autism head-on. When families access her services, they engage in self-care by seeking support without fear or judgment.

Community Connection —Glow Pediatrics builds a community. Families connect, share experiences, normalize feelings, and find solace. Self-care often thrives in community spaces where individuals can lean on each other.
